Insights from Suri Kasirer: Navigating NYC's Government Transition


We’re just weeks away from Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani officially taking office on January 1. With a bold policy agenda aimed at addressing and solving livability and affordability issues, the new administration must stay committed to aligning with key stakeholders on issues and priorities critical to New Yorkers and the city’s future. 


Our CEO, Suri Kasirer, outlined some ways in which the public and private sectors can and have aligned to contribute to a prosperous, safer and more affordable New York. We have real challenges to overcome, but we also have a very strong foundation on which to build.

Kasirer Highlights: 


Nonprofit & Real Estate Event with JLL and HSF Kramer

Kasirer co-hosted a nonprofit-focused real estate event with Herbert Smith Freehills Kramer US and JLL, bringing together leaders from across the city and sector to explore how organizations are adapting to economic pressures, shifting community needs, and an evolving real estate landscape. As part of the program, Suri Kasirer joined a panel conversation with Seth Pinsky, Thomas Yu, Dawn Pinnock, and Susan Sack, discussing nonprofit innovation, collaboration, and the ways real estate strategy can strengthen mission-driven work. Kasirer at SOMOS Puerto Rico 2025

Kasirer sent a team of 10 staff to this year’s SOMOS Puerto Rico conference, playing an active role in key conversations and events. The firm proudly co-sponsored the Mother Cabrini Foundation’s annual event, supporting nonprofit leaders from across New York. During the conference, Kasirer President Julie Greenberg also joined the New York Building Congress for a transportation and infrastructure panel alongside public- and private-sector leaders, focused on the future of transportation and infrastructure in NY.


Eldad Gothelf Joins the Herrick Does That Podcast 

Kasirer’s SVP of Real Estate, Eldad Gothelf, joined the Herrick Does That podcast to discuss the complexities of hotel development in New York City, including regulatory shifts, community engagement, and the role of local politics. Check it out here.


New York Building Congress – Council of Industry Women Discussion

Suri Kasirer and Julie Greenberg joined the New York Building Congress’ Council of Industry Women for a conversation on the New York City election cycle and 2025 ballot proposals. Alongside Council Member Julie Menin, they shared insights on the dynamics expected to shape the years ahead, and how these developments could influence the city’s built environment and the broader industry.


Women’s Thought Leader Reception with City & State

Kasirer co-hosted City & State’s annual Women’s Thought Leader Reception, which brought together more than 250 women leaders across government, politics, business, advocacy, and the arts. The event featured influential figures shaping New York’s civic landscape, including Elle Bisgaard-Church, incoming Chief of Staff to Assembly Member Zohran Mamdani; Hope Knight, President, CEO and Commissioner of Empire State Development; and Cathleen McCadden Benjamin, Appointments Secretary to Governor Hochul.


BDO & Citi Nonprofit Leadership Discussion

Suri Kasirer joined a panel hosted by BDO and Citi — alongside David Carlos of JLL, Nicole De Bare of HSF Kramer, and Dipty Jain of BDO — to discuss the current landscape for nonprofits and how organizations are navigating increasing demand for services, funding constraints, and shifting city, state, and federal policies. The conversation explored emerging trends, including the rise in nonprofit mergers driven not only by mission alignment but by financial necessity, and underscored the importance of creativity and adaptability as nonprofits work to sustain their missions amid ongoing economic and policy uncertainty.



Post-Election Briefings with JLL and Savills

Suri Kasirer, Julie Greenberg, and Michael Braun joined JLL and Savills for post-election conversations focused on the implications of New York City’s incoming Mamdani administration. Across the two sessions they broke down early policy priorities and what they could mean for housing, commercial real estate, economic development, and the broader civic landscape, offering practical guidance on how to prepare for the year ahead.



🤝Client Highlights:

  • Long Island City Rezoning: Kasirer supported a major property owner through the successful approval of the Long Island City rezoning plan, which the City Council unanimously passed in November. Through extensive engagement with community groups, local stakeholders, and elected officials, Kasirer helped build a broad coalition backing a proposal that will bring nearly 15,000 new homes, new schools, community space, and long-term stability to one of NYC’s fastest-growing neighborhoods.


  • New 42: We celebrate and congratulate New 42 on being named a recipient of the 2025 Tony Honors for Excellence in the Theatre. Awarded by the American Theatre Wing and The Broadway League, this recognition celebrates New 42’s extraordinary work to make the performing arts accessible and inspiring for audiences of all ages.


  • Bungalow Projects: Kasirer helped Bungalow Projects secure crucial tax benefits through the New York City Industrial Development Agency (NYCIDA) enabling Bungalow to invest over $500 million in developing two new film & tv production facilities in Brooklyn, which will generate over 2,400 jobs and support workforce development programs through partnerships with Hook Arts Media and Reel Works. Kasirer briefed elected officials, local stakeholders, and garnered support from business leaders across the city to amplify the economic benefits of Bungalow's proposal. 


  • New York Climate Exchange: Kasirer supported the approval to transform Governors Island’s landmarked Liggett Hall into a year-round academic and cultural hub for the New York Climate Exchange, anchored by Stony Brook University. Scheduled for completion in 2029, the Exchange will position New York as a center for climate solutions by bringing together research institutions, businesses, and community partners. Kasirer secured support from Manhattan Community Board 1, the Landmarks Preservation Commission, and local elected officials, reinforced by extensive engagement with climate, labor, corporate, and preservation partners.


🏆 Awards & Accolades: 

Suri Kasirer was honored with the Joan H. Weill Impact Award at Citymeals on Wheels’ 38th Annual Power Lunch at The Plaza Hotel. The event brought together leaders across media, philanthropy, fashion, and public service and raised $1.4 million to support food-insecure older New Yorkers. The award recognizes Suri’s longstanding commitment to strengthening communities and advancing Citymeals’ mission across the five boroughs.



Recognized as one of NYREJ’s 2025 Innovators in Commercial Real Estate for his leadership in advancing community-focused development, strengthening neighborhoods, and delivering projects that create long-term benefits for New Yorkers.
